The Universities and Colleges Division includes University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, College universitaire de Saint-Boniface, Red River College, Canadian Mennonite University and other small colleges.

Dr. Karen R. Grant is a sociologist and Vice Provost (Academic Affairs) at the University of Manitoba. Winner of a YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award in 2004, she has been recognized for her work in women’s health research and has published on issues as diverse as women’s use of prenatal diagnosis, women’s stories from the 1997 Red River Flood, gender-based research analysis, health care privatization, and home care. Her research is intended to empower women by putting their health in their own hands.

Karen is a highly regarded leader at the University of Manitoba where she has been in senior administration since 1995. First as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts, and now as Vice Provost, she plays a key role in mentoring faculty and other academic leaders, and creating conditions for academic success for both students and faculty.

Karen has provided extensive service nationally as a member of the governing council of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Science Advisory Board of Health Canada. She is currently Vice President (Research Policy) of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and is on the board of the Canadian Research Knowledge Network.
