F.A.Q.
- Why is United Way moving?
- As part of an ongoing commitment to our community, a new, larger space will allow our expanding network of community partners further opportunities to connect, collaborate and enhance services and programs.
- Where is the new location?
- In the heart of downtown, on Winnipeg's historic Main Street between Pacific and Alexander Avenues.
- How was the new location determined?
- United Way's various stakeholders felt it was important to be located in the heart of Winnipeg, close to much of the work the organization supports.
United Way researched a number of possibilities and worked with CentreVenture to identify and secure the current parcel of land. United Way met with dozens of people and organizations to ask for specific advice and ideas about our new presence on Main Street, including folks who work, do business and live in the neighbourhood.
- Will there be parking?
- The new location provides approximately 20 ground surface parking spaces for visitors and volunteers. There will be no parking stalls in front of the building on Main Street and no new parking facilities constructed.
- When is United Way going to move?
- United Way hopes to occupy the new space by July 2010.
- Why is United Way building an office as opposed to renting an appropriate space?
- Calculations showed that constructing a new space saves money over the long term compared to leasing.
- How much will the building cost?
- The land itself was approximately half a million dollars and the building cost is budgeted at $8.6 million. In addition, furniture, fixtures and moving costs are approximately $1 million.
- Where is the money coming from?
- The construction is being funded entirely through a stimulus grant provided by the Province of Manitoba and Government of Canada, and a small group of long-time United Way supporters and committed Winnipeggers.
Under no circumstances will donations to United Way's annual campaign be used to fund the new location.
- How will the space be used to benefit our community?
- The main floor will be welcoming place for visitors and those seeking information and referrals to services available in our community. It will also provide an opportunity for members of the community to connect, learn, innovate and share. There will be a number of resources available to carry out this vision including:
- Referral/Reception Agent-greeting and guiding individuals attending main floor functions or visiting United Way offices, providing advice and referral.
- Hot Desks-a temporary home on United Way's main floor gives social purpose enterprises, new initiatives and organizations access to computers, office supports and meeting space as they work towards self-sustainability.
- Smart Conference Room-the latest communication technology will promote collaboration, build capacity and facilitate discussion locally and globally among non-profits, community organizations and associations, business and labour groups, educational institutions and government agencies.
- Atrium/Gallery-a space to gather, converse, celebrate and showcase the amazing diversity and capacity in our community. Imagine kids from Graffiti Art Programming holding an art exhibition, or weavers from the Canadian Muslim Women's Institute having a textile sale.
