A sweet gesture for United Way

When it comes to doing their part for our community, Winnipeggers definitely take the cake.

Watch the fun via YouTubeMore than 17,000 cakes in fact, during the second annual Cupcake Day for United Way.

Over 125 workplaces throughout the city participating in United Way workplace campaigns preordered assorted cupcakes in the days leading up to the event.

Then, on Cupcake Day, Thursday, October 7, dozens of volunteers staffed the confusion corner parking lot to offer passing commuters the chance to purchase these delicious cupcakes in support of United Way's work in our community.

For each dozen sold at the regular prize of $15, the Cupcake Corner donated $7 to United Way.

At the end of the event, 1446 one-dozen boxes of cupcakes had been sold (so many, that if you stacked all the boxes on top of each other, it would make a tower of cupcakes 316 feet tall!).

"The response was simply overwhelming," said Derrick Godfrey, owner of The Cupcake Corner. "It's a wonderful result for a wonderful organization in our community."

United Way would like to thank Derrick and his team at The Cupcake Corner for helping to bake a big difference in our community and Andrea and Jay of media partner Curve 94.3 FM for promoting Cupcake Day live on location.

Thank you also to Winnipeggers for sinking your teeth into this event and for your patience as volunteers and staff scrambled to fill orders and make deliveries over Thursday and Friday.
