It's a wrap for United Way of Winnipeg GenNext volunteers who helped prepare for a Day of Caring with the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre
"GenNext members are always looking for ways to make a real difference in our community," said Isha Khan, program manager for GenNext. "This event was the perfect opportunity to get involved and have fun at the same time."
In the basement of Trinity United Church, the group served up a turkey dinner with all the trimmings prepared by students from Tech Voc's Culinary Arts program.
Prior to the event, GenNext volunteers shopped for and wrapped gifts purchased with generous sponsorship from Qualico and given out by St. Norbert MLA Marilyn Brick in the role of Santa.
They also coordinated a cookie decorating table and helped children choose inexpensive gifts for family members from a selection provided by Scotiabank.
One of United Way's newest and fastest growing initiatives, GenNext is for young business and community leaders aged 25 to 40 who are passionate about Winnipeg and committed to creating opportunities for a better life for everyone here.
Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre offers counselling, support, resource and referral services to empower women – many of whom have left abusive relationships. As a member of the AssetBuilders Partnership, the centre also offers training to help families in low-income households achieve long-term financial stability.
December is shaping up to be an entire month of caring, with 32 individual Days of Caring. A Day of Caring is a volunteer opportunity like no other. A company, organization or group works with a United Way of Winnipeg agency partner to complete a much needed project or hold a special event.
