Manitobans most generous in Canada

Proving we're the heart of Canada based on more than mere geography, Manitoba continues to rank as the country's most generous province.

Comm. News - Generous ManitobansAccording to the Fraser's Institute's annual generosity index , 28 per cent of tax filers in Manitoba donate to registered charities - the highest percentage among all provinces.

The total amount donated is also the highest in Canada at 1.14 per cent of total income earned in the province.

"Since we began tracking charitable donations in 1996, Manitoba has consistently been a leader among Canadian provinces both in the percentage of tax filers who donate to charity and in the percentage of total income donated," said Niels Veldhuis, Fraser Institute director of fiscal studies.

The news comes as no surprise to United Way of Winnipeg.

"We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support we continue to receive from Winnipeggers - even in these uncertain economic times," said Jo Wright, United Way's Director of Major Giving. "People understand that now more than ever we must take care of one another and make certain we all have opportunities for a better life and hope for the future."

With only weeks left in our 2008 campaign, United Way is counting on Winnipeggers' renowned generosity to help raise $1.3 million - the amount needed to achieve our 2008 fundraising goal of $17.8 million.

"If anyone can do it, we can," said Wright, referring to the Fraser Institute's report.
