Every day in Winnipeg, thousands of people from every corner of our city are working together through United Way to build a stronger community, united in a common desire to create opportunities for a better life for everyone.

Hundreds of those people were on hand for United Way's annual general meeting and luncheon on Wednesday, June 18 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

Hosted by Gail Asper, 2006/07 Board of Trustees chair and president of both the Canwest Global and Asper Foundations, the event provided an opportunity to celebrate the past year's accomplishments.

More importantly, it was a chance for attendees to connect with one another and reinforce what it means to be united, says Asper.

"In so many capacities, United Way is about getting together, sharing ideas, working alongside one another to create lasting change, and mobilizing, inspiring and encouraging others to do the same," she says.

"The more we work together to make a difference, the happier, healthier and more fulfilled we'll all be."

The Honourable John Harvard, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba was in attendance as well as Fort Rouge MLA Jennifer Howard, who represented the Premier's office.

A video presentation gave attendees a glimpse into the lives of fellow Winnipeggers, whose involvement with United Way, in concert with the work and involvement of many others, has had a profoundly positive impact on all our lives, as well as their own.

Thank you to everyone who attended the luncheon and all those who helped make this past year so successful. Together, through United Way, we're creating opportunities for young people to succeed in school and life, families to achieve long-term financial stability; and the entire community to grow strong and healthy.
