United Way of Winnipeg's 2009 Campaign took flight today with the announcement of a lofty fundraising goal-$18 218 778, topping last year's total by almost $350 000.

Comm News - Plane Pull 09"The effects of last year's economic uncertainty are still being felt, particularly by those already facing challenges. That's why we need everyone on board to help us reach our fundraising goal this year," said Jeff Zabudsky, 2009 Campaign Chair. "It's only because of Winnipeggers' incredible generosity, that we could consider setting our sights higher than ever before."

Over 1300 Winnipeggers from the business, labour, government and non-profit sectors helped get the city-wide campaign airborne at Red River College's Stevenson Campus by competing in the 6th Annual Plane Pull. Battling for fastest time to tug a commercial jet aircraft a designated distance, teams also vied for prizes and bragging rights for best cheer and best dress.

Comm news - Jeff Z Plane Pull 09United Way's 2009 Campaign Cabinet rolled in on a school bus, announcing the theme of this year's event-education, one of United Way's three strategic priority areas. As president of Red River College, it's also an area near and dear to Zabudsky's heart.

Although today marks the official beginning, the 2009 Campaign is already off to a soaring start thanks to Pacesetter workplaces who exemplify leadership by starting and completing their campaigns early. As a result of hard work and enthusiasm, $7 089 261, or 39% of this year's goal has already been raised!

"Never in United Way's 44-year history have we seen such energy and commitment this early in a campaign," said Zabudsky. "Winnipeggers are sending a clear message that I hope everyone in this city, and everyone in Canada hears. Winnipeg is one of the most generous cities in the country!"

"The campaign has a long way to go, but Winnipeggers are off to a tremendous start," adds Zabudsky. Following the formalities, over 40 teams representing Winnipeg's business, labour, government and non-profit sectors competed in the plane pull.

Propelled by a tasty barbeque lunch, 20 teams, including a team of media all-stars, battled in the Competitive Pull for the fastest time hauling a 191 000 lb Boeing 747.

Another 21 teams let their community spirit soar by towing a 90 000 lb McDonnell Douglas DC-9 in the Fun Pull. CFB 17 Wing manoeuvred its way to number one in the Competitive Pull and Convergys Customer Management Canada towed the line to the top of the Fun Pull.

Like the plane pull, it will take all of us pulling together to reach our goal and provide kids with alternatives to crime, drugs and life on the streets, reduce poverty, and build safer, healthier neighbourhoods.

Come fly with us, and make the 2009 Campaign a soaring success.

Without you, there would be no way.
