Exactly one year following some of the toughest global economic news in decades, Winnipeggers are demonstrating they are more committed than ever to supporting one another through United Way of Winnipeg.

United Way's first report session revealed Winnipeggers are almost halfway toward achieving our total fundraising goal of $18.2+ million
The effects of that commitment were evident during United Way's first Report Session Friday, October 2, when it was announced that Winnipeggers have already donated more than $8.5 million - 47 per cent of this year's total fundraising goal of $18.2+ million.

As we gain a better understanding of the repercussions a year of economic uncertainty has had on all our lives, Winnipeggers appear more dedicated than ever to ensuring a network of essential resources is available through United Way, said Jeff Zabudsky, United Way's 2009 Campaign Chair.

"Thanks to enthusiastic Winnipeggers who donated early, we're off to a great start," Zabudsky added. "But we still have a long way to go. Now more than ever, we need full participation from the entire community to ensure we're able to maintain and even broaden our efforts to address Winnipeg's most challenging social issues."

Continuing support from the provincial government means every dollar donated to United Way's annual campaign goes back into the community where it supports innovative programs and partnerships that provide kids with alternatives to crime, drugs and life on the streets; reduce poverty; and build safer, healthier neighbourhoods.

Held at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown and hosted by United Way youth volunteers Michael Champagne and Chelsea Herdman, Report Session One also celebrated young people's contributions throughout our city - an issue near and dear to Zabudsky, who is also President & CEO of Red River College.

"I see the impact United Way has in the lives of young people who make their way into my college," Zabudsky said. "It's profound. It's amazing. These people are going to be our future. United Way's focus on youth, education and bringing kids out of poverty - those are all good things and they're all going to pay dividends."

Thanks to everyone who attended and everyone who is helping build a safer, healthier community through United Way. Without you, there would be no way.
