Appeal for skates and helmets takes centre ice

United Way of Winnipeg - in partnership with The Forks Market merchants and AMJ Campbell Van Lines - is collecting gently used skates and helmets in an effort to give more Winnipeg families a chance to take to the ice this season.
"Often the only thing that stands between these families and an afternoon of frozen fun is the lack of proper equipment," said Scott Sime, Vice President Marketing and Engagement for United Way. "In line with our commitment to building strong families and improving personal well-being, this initiative is meant to create opportunities for everyone to stay active and enjoy our winter."
The skate and helmet drive is also a natural fit for The Forks Market, which sits adjacent to the world's longest naturally frozen skating trail - a Winnipeg winter landmark long before it achieved its status as a Guinness record holder.
"With all of the attention The Forks is receiving for both the trail and our winter programming, this seems like a no-brainer for us," said Randy Cameron, General Manager, The Forks Market. "It's a nice way for us to give back to the community and be able to help others enjoy winter activity."
Gently used skates and helmets in every size may be dropped off in the centre court of The Forks Market, in front of the tower atrium near the elevator.
The donations will then be distributed to Winnipeg families through United Way's network of close to 100 agency partners and community groups throughout the city.
"We encourage everyone to bring a pair down to The Forks Market to share with someone else in our community," said Bill Hopkins, Vice President AMJ Campbell Van Lines.
Thank you Winnipeg for helping us create opportunities for Winnipeggers on the sidelines to get into the game!
