Hundreds of Winnipeg children weathered this winter in comfort thanks to your overwhelming support for United Way's Koats for Kids program.

Koats for Kids 20th season wrap upKoats for Kids wrapped its 20th anniversary season on February 13, 2009 having collected and distributed more than 16,000 articles of winter outerwear free of charge to families throughout the city. To make it all possible, Winnipeggers devoted a total of 410 volunteer hours between October and February.

Since the program began in 1989, Winnipeggers have donated more than 136,000 coats, scarves, mitts, toques, boots and ski pants.

"We are so grateful to all the individuals, schools, workplaces and organizations who recognize the importance of keeping children safe and healthy throughout the winter months," said program manager Barb Brown.

Koats for Kids is a partnership between United Way of Winnipeg, CTV, Winnipeg Sun, 1290 CFRW, United Way agency partner Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape, Perth's, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and AMJ Campbell Van Lines. These sponsors collectively provide in-kind support to promote the program and to collect, transport, clean and distribute donated clothing.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Remember to put aside your gently-used winter outerwear this spring and we look forward to seeing you again in September when Koats for Kids turns 21!
