Clothing drive raises awareness of United Way's broad impact

Employee's from Cambrian's Wall St. branch prepare to deliver clothes and personal items to neighbouring United Way agency partners
Cambrian Credit Union is all about spreading the wealth.
So when credit union employees recently augmented their highly successful annual workplace campaign with a city-wide clothing drive, they made a point to involve several United Way agency partners within close proximity to each of Cambrian's 11 branches and head office in Winnipeg and Selkirk.
Grant Heather, a member of Cambrian's United Way council and the drive's coordinator, says this approach allows employees to see that United Way impacts people from all walks of life in neighbourhoods throughout Winnipeg.
"What staff really gets out of it is the awareness," Heather says. "As much as the financial side of donating to United Way and funding agencies is important, it's being aware that these agencies exist in every area of the city and not just the core," says Heather.
From June 13 to 17, each branch collected donations of clothing and personal hygiene items, which were then distributed to neighbouring agencies by Cambrian staff on June 18 and June 19.
Employees at Cambrian's Wall St. branch - who were partnered with the John Howard Society of Manitoba and West Central Women's Centre - also contributed five dollars each towards the purchase of deodorant, toothpaste and other personal items.
"It's really great to have Cambrian Credit Union collecting clothing to support our clients as they reintegrate into the community, sometimes with nothing but the clothes they are wearing," says John Hutton, Executive Director of the John Howard Society.
"Not only does it provide something much needed - it is also a way of showing our clients that there are people who care about them and that just because they've made mistakes, they don't stop being members of the community."
The John Howard Society provides counselling, support and educational programs for victims of crime, offenders, ex-offenders and their families. Services include parenting, literacy, employment and anger management programs.
West Central Women's Centre provides advocacy and skill development for local women while addressing issues of safety, poverty and childcare. Resources include a crafts program, child play area, a clothing exchange, educational and health information sessions and a community cupboard.
Thank you to all the employees at Cambrian Credit Union for your hard work and dedication to helping United Way provide the tools, confidence and support people need to create strong communities where everyone can lead a full and happy life.
