Smooth Shave for Legal Beagles

Boardroom became barbershop for a day at Manitoba's largest and oldest law firm.

Boardroom turned to barbershop
Herb Peters, along with fifteen other lawyers at Aikins Macaulay Thorvaldson LLP, faced the judges at a beard growing competition to raise money for United Way.
Lawyers from Aikins MacAulay Thorvaldson LLP faced a different kind of judgment on Friday, March 14.

The evidence presented: 15 bristling new beards grown for a special contest to raise money for United Way.

The firm participates in the annual campaign, but Judi Kreutz, employee campaign chair, believes there are year-round benefits to fundraising for United Way.

"It raises awareness and shows how easy it is to do something that makes a difference. And it's good for workplace morale. The whole office comes together and has some fun," Kreutz said.

Staff paid $5 to enter or $10 to avoid the itchy competition, all proceeds going to United Way.

Even those who couldn't grow a beard found ways to participate-two submitted photos of past beards, another improvised with a creatively cut plastic bag.

Three female employees presided as judges over the competition and awarded prizes for Greyest, Fullest and Most Unique beards.

But every entrant walked away with a prize in the end-a small container of shaving cream, a razor and a pack of bandages.

Partner Herb Peters levelled additional charges at his co-workers-raise $500 and he'd shave his own moustache of 35 years.

Barbers were standing by as the contest closed, alongside them, Herb's wife who had never seen her hubby without his stache.

The verdict-$1000 raised, money that will help create opportunities for a better life for everyone living in Winnipeg.

And Herb...well, he proved a man of his own convictions.

He's sporting a super-smooth shave for United Way and joins the 2008 Campaign Cabinet as Professions Co-Chair.
