A group of volunteers and agency staff at Elwick Village and Resource Centre take a well-earned break while cleaning up the neighbourhood to prepare for a community barbeque. More than 140 students took part in activities at 11 agency partners in Winnipeg.
Working alongside staff and volunteers from 11 United Way agency partners, students spent the day picking up litter, painting, gardening, cleaning and organizing - whatever they could to support non-profit organizations that support Winnipeggers.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for young people from all over the city to connect with one another and take action to improve our community," said Justin Cloutier, Chair of United Way's Youth Day of Caring Committee. "For many, it's an introduction to a lifelong volunteer relationship with these organizations."
The day began at 8:30am with a Welcome Breakfast at St. John's Leisure Centre, featuring a spectacular dance performance by Sisler's Most Wanted. Students were then transported by bus to assigned non-profit agencies including:- CNIB
- Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre
- Community Living Winnipeg
- North Point Douglas Women's Resource Centre
- Pregnancy and Family Support Services
- Elwick Village and Resource Centre
- William Whyte Residents Association
- John Howard Society
- Spence Neighbourhood Association
- Point Douglas Residence
- New Life Ministries
Volunteers were treated to a delicious pizza lunch courtesy of Santa Lucia. At the end of the day, everyone returned to St. John's Leisure Centre for a special wrap up celebration hosted by HOT 103 morning personality Ace Burpee.
Every year, hundreds of youth throughout Winnipeg make significant contributions to our community through United Way. As volunteers, participants and leaders, their energy and enthusiasm is shaping a brighter future for everyone as they set an example for all to follow. Thank you!
A special shout out to Trevor and Adam for acting as photographer and videographer. Thanks also to all our sponsors for making the annual Youth Day of Caring a huge success!
