Union members from across Winnipeg came to the table on Monday, September 15 for the 2008 United Way Labour Campaign Presidents' Breakfast.

"It was great to see organized labour come together for this very important event," said Mike Davidson, president of CUPE 500. "Our members care very much about this community and that's what United Way of Winnipeg is all about."
This was the first Presidents' Breakfast for 30 members of United Steelworkers 9074, said president David Zirk. The local consists of roughly 37 workplaces - the majority of which are running United Way workplace campaigns this year.
"The level of participation from the wide variety of unions in Winnipeg is a true testament to labour's vital role in United Way," said Dave Sauer, United Way's Labour Director.
Sponsored by the Winnipeg Labour Council and held at Union Centre on Broadway, the event raised a total of $1434 for United Way initiatives that create opportunities for a better life for all Winnipeggers.
Attendees heard from Heather Grant-Jury, United Way's 2007 Campaign Chair as well as current Chair Bob Silver and president of the Manitoba Federation of Labour Darlene Dziewit, who all stressed the impact labour and business have on the annual campaign and the community in general.
"It was literally an alphabet soup of unions that fed the important United Way message to the membership here today," said Sauer. "Now we take that message directly to the workers for the campaign."
United Way of Winnipeg was incorporated as a partnership between the Winnipeg Labour Council and the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce over 40 years ago.
Thanks to everyone who participated and good luck with your campaign. You're off to a great start!
