United Way of Winnipeg is thrilled with today's announcement of federal and provincial funding of $6.6 million to support its relocation to downtown.

Comm news - relocation a reality - May 29/09For the past 25 years, United Way has leased the same space at 5 Donald Street, during which time its role has evolved from being one of a fund raiser to one focused on bringing people together to find solutions to our city’s most pressing problems.

"Today's United Way is comprised of thousands of volunteers from every part of our community - along with committees, councils and innovative community partnerships working year round", said Allan Fineblit, incoming chair of United Way's Board of Trustees. "The new location will provide us with the space needed to support all of this work, and to forge and support new partnerships and collaborations."

More than bricks and mortar, the new building will enhance United Way's work and broaden its reach and impact in the community. The main floor will accommodate professional development, training and volunteer opportunities in the non-profit sector.

United Way is committed to our community, and as part of that commitment is excited to contribute to the revitalization of Winnipeg's downtown. Centre Venture has played an important role in this process and helped United Way secure a parcel of land on the west side of Main Street between Pacific and Alexander.

The project is estimated at approximately $10 million and a few of United Way's long-time friends have shown an interest in supporting the project. Under no circumstances will donations to United Way's annual campaign be used to fund the new building, or its operation costs.

United Way will begin the tendering process next week and hopes to move into its new space the summer of 2010.

United Way would like to thank everyone who has made this project possible. A special thanks to the federal and provincial governments and Centre Venture.
