Almost half-way through the 2007 Campaign season and Winnipeggers have helped us hit the $10 million mark.
United Way partner organization Graffiti Art Programming (GAP) served as a colourful backdrop for Report Session 2 where campaign progress was announced.
Winnipeggers have identified opportunities for youth as a vital priority. Report Session 2 celebrated and recognized United Way's response.
"Like never before, young Winnipeggers are engaged and taking an active role in creating projects that meet school, neighbourhood and community needs," said Heather Grant-Jury, United Way's 2007 Campaign Chair. "Our youth Engagement strategy is all about tapping into the skills and enthusiasm of today’s young leaders."
Guest speaker Megan Turner, Program Director of the st.ART Program at GAP, praised United Way for stepping up to support their work.
"They understand the need for action," she said. "Not only was it United Way who showed us how to use art as a tool, but it is United way who gives us the tools to do the job successfully."
Guests were treated to traditional Aboriginal singing and drumming by artist Steve Castel who has utilized GAP programming and believes in the healing power of art.
During the report session, Castel, along with seven other artists, painted stylized numbers on small canvasses.
When the time came, the 8 canvasses were hung along one of the gallery's walls, painting the picture of United Way’s 2007 Campaign progress.
The final figure: $10,007,514 or sixty-one per cent of the $16.5 million goal. But with almost $6.5 million left to raise before year's end, there’s still work to be done.
