Young community and business leaders aged 25 to 40 came prepared to paint the town red during United Way of Winnipeg's second annual Red October event on Thursday, October 15, 2009.

Close to 200 guests enjoyed an early evening reception at Blush Ultra Club in downtown Winnipeg where they learned about meaningful ways to get involved and make a difference in our community through United Way's GenNext Council.

"These are young leaders on the threshold of inheriting our community, who want to have a role in making it better and stronger for all of us," said Sam Pellettieri, Chief Investment Officer, Wellington West Capital Inc. and GenNext Chair. "Being that many of these people are also raising the next generation and managing careers at the same time, it's important they be able to have fun and engage with peers as well. GenNext provides opportunities for both."

The evening's program included a presentation by Cory Mohr, a Community Facilitator with Nor'West Co-op Community Health Centre. A United Way agency partner focused on building safer, healthier neighbourhoods, Nor'West has also partnered with GenNext for two Days of Caring in Winnipeg's Gilbert Park.

Afterward, guests were invited to sign up for volunteer opportunities in conjunction with United Way agency partners. These included planning and hosting a family holiday party, supervising gym activities or helping at a homework club.

Over the past year, more than 100 people have gotten involved as a result of GenNext activities and events like Red October.

Thank you to Peter Drazic and Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson law firm for generously sponsoring the event and DeLuca's for providing the delicious appetizers, cappuccino and gift basket for our draw. Thank you also to Gurpreet Brar, Justin Bova, Daniel Goldberg, Raif Richardson, Kristy Wasylyk, Alexis Hur, Carmyn Finch and other GenNext members who made this event an overwhelming success.

Without you, there would be no way!
