With a flourish of his cape and a twinkle in his eye, United Way's newly revealed ambassador of change, Captain Possible, revealed 2007’s Campaign progress.

Hosted by Manitoba Hyrdro, United Way of Winnipeg's 1st report session for the 2007 Campaign was themed around the relationship between business and labour, a partnership that gave rise to United Way of Winnipeg over forty years ago. The session celebrated the spirit of collective action towards the shared goal of a stronger, safer community.

Speakers Bob Brennan, President and CEO of Manitoba Hydro, and Lauris Kleven, Business Manger of IBEW, one of four unions representing the staff at Hydro, shared their perspectives on what their workplace campaign means.

“It demonstrates to all our employees that they can make a difference through their financial contribution as well as their volunteer involvement,” said Brennan.

“For the unionized brothers and sisters in the workplace and the support their companies lend to their campaign, it’s about a community. It’s about the power of collective action and it’s about the power of United Way,” said Kleven.

As report session wound to a close, a recognizable super-hero anthem built to a crescendo. United Way logo emblazoned on his chest, Captain Possible, United Way's newly conceived ambassador of change, raced into the building, red cape trailing. In a single bound, the masked man leapt onto stage to reveal an achievement of 43 per cent, or $7,101,640 of the $16.5 million goal.

“It’s great news for Winnipeg,” said Heather Grant-Jury, United Way's 2007 Campaign Chair. “We’re well on our way to achieving something amazing, our most ambitious goal to date, but we still have a long way to go.”
