It's important for young Winnipeggers to get involved in our community, says Michael Champagne, United Way volunteer and 2008 Manitoba Aboriginal Youth Achievement Award recipient.
Congratulations to United Way youth volunteer Michael Champagne on receiving a Manitoba Aboriginal Youth Achievement Award for outstanding commitment to community and volunteerism.

The award recognizes Aboriginal youth from Manitoba who demonstrate a high standard of excellence, dedication, leadership and accomplishments in the following areas: academic, athletic, artistic, cultural, community/volunteerism, business/entrepreneurial, personal achievement and employment in a traditional field.

"This award is a symbol that Aboriginal youth can be recognized for their hard work and perseverance," he said. "I dedicate this award to the children and youth involved in the child welfare system - you all have the potential to overcome the many obstacles and the low expectations that life will place before you."

"I can say this with certainty, because I did it."

As a member of United Way of Winnipeg's Youth Relations Council and a program coordinator at Ndinawe Youth Resource Centre, Michael is a mentor, role model and advocate for more active youth involvement in our community.

Michael was recognized during the 15th annual award dinner on October 30, 2008 at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.

"Michael is a remarkable young man," said Susan Lewis, President of United Way of Winnipeg. "United Way and the entire city of Winnipeg are stronger thanks to his involvement."

One of 14 winners chosen by peers, Michael received $1000 to help him prepare for the future and pursue his dreams.

The awards were founded in 1994 to counter negative perceptions of Aboriginal youth in Manitoba and are sponsored by Anishniaabe Oway-Ishi Inc. - a non-profit, community based employment and training preparation program.
