United Way of Winnipeg is seeking donations of used digital cameras so hundreds of youth in our city will have a chance to learn about art and our community.
The Coalition of Community Based Youth Serving Agencies, a group of 19 agency partners supported by United Way, will hold digital photography workshops throughout April for approximately 300 youth participants.
The initiative will culminate with an art show this spring at United Way agency partner Graffiti Art Programming showcasing how youth see our community. The exhibit will include videos, projections, posters and traditional black and white prints.
"This will be a multi-media celebration of youth, diversity and Winnipeg," said Cam Forbes, Executive Director of Art City, another United Way agency partner. "We think this is an exceptional project and after the show is over, the cameras will continue to instill a love of art and enrich the lives of children at risk."

United Way supports dozens of after-school and mentorship programs that help children and youth achieve their potential. These programs are proven to contribute to higher academic achievement, improved behavior and a greater sense of community belonging.
"Art is a tool for community development, social change and individual growth," said Kate Fenske, Director of Communications for United Way. "These workshops will teach youth new skills and self-expression, through which they'll gain confidence and self-esteem. This can make a big difference in how they approach school and interact with others."
The Coalition of Community Based Youth Serving Agencies works to address the issues facing children and youth by increasing the impact of existing resources through collaborative programming and shared knowledge.
Donations of used digital cameras with compatible accessories (batteries, memory cards, usb cords) can be dropped off at United Way at 5 Donald Street throughout March during office hours. For larger donations of 10 plus cameras, please call 477-5360 to arrange for a pick-up.
Select photos will be posted on United Way's website in May, following the art show!
