Lindsey Brown, Deanna Ng, Jessica Edwards and Evan Bowness are the latest recipients of United Way of Winnipeg's Youth Leaders in Action Scholarship.
Each are receiving a $500 scholarship for making a difference in our community through their involvement with a United Way agency partner - either as a volunteer, employee or program participant.
"Recipients are exceptional leaders under the age of 30 whose energy and enthusiasm is making Winnipeg a better place for all of us,' says Chelsea Herdman, a volunteer on United Way's Youth Relations Council.
All four will be profiled as City Heroes on Citytv's Breakfast Television over the next few weeks, beginning with Lindsey Brown.
Lindsey earned her award as a volunteer and role model with Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg. While working toward a degree in education, Lindsey also coordinates an after-school program aimed at helping inner-city children succeed in school and life by nurturing good study habits as well as self-esteem and confidence.
Deanna Ng and Jessica Edwards both began as program participants before becoming involved as volunteers - Deanna with Canadian National Institute for the Blind and Jessica with Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg.
Deanna is currently enrolled in the Disability and Community Support program at Red River College. Her ambition is to help individuals with disabilities reach both their employment and education goals.
Jessica's desire to serve the community and spark positive change within the child welfare system is driving both her volunteer work and her pursuit of a degree in social work.
Evan Bowness is a student at the University of Manitoba and a volunteer tutor in the John Howard literacy program, working with inmates from the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
Congratulations to this year's Youth Leaders in Action Scholarship recipients. And thank you for all you've done to create opportunities for a better life for all Winnipeggers through United Way.
