Every penny counts!

Grade 5 and 6 students at Ecole Regent Park recently learned it doesn't take much to make a difference in our community when they initiated a penny war to raise money for United Way.

Comm News - Pennys Count - Jan8/10
Grade 6 students from Ecole Regent Park in Transcona raised more than $825 for United Way one penny at a time.
About 175 students competed to see which class could collect the most pennies as part of a grade 6 citizenship project. To up the ante, classes could sabotage one another by depositing coins other than pennies into competitors’ collections. Congratulations to Mme. BreAnne Scott’s grade 6 students for having the most pennies after subtracting the value of all other coins.

"The penny war was really fun because we got to donate money while we were having fun," said Brittany, 11. "All the money is going to go to the United Way. This is good because we can help people who need help right here in Winnipeg."

In the end, students raised $825.63 for United Way through the penny war. In total, Ecole Regent Park raised more than $2,300 for United Way this year through a number of fundraising activities and the generosity of staff, students, and parents alike.

Incredibly generous gestures like this have brought United Way within $300 000 of what is needed to maintain a stable network of essential programs and services for the coming year.

With only days left in United Way's 2009 campaign, every person and every penny will be vital to ensuring these important resources remain available for our friends, family, neighbours and co-workers when they’re needed most.

Thank you Ecole Regent Park for helping create opportunities for lasting change and better lives in Winnipeg through United Way. Without you, there would be no way.
