Students join forces for United Way's Youth Day of Caring
As far as extra curricular activities go, United Way's Youth Day of Caring just might be in a class of its own.
The annual event, now in its third year, drew more than one hundred students into the West Broadway neighbourhood to work alongside staff from 13 United Way agency partners.
Created by youth for youth, it's a chance for young people to work alongside a United Way agency partner to complete a meaningful project.
The program has been a huge success. Over 300 students have participated, completing dozens of projects in our community.
Kanwal Brar of United Way's Youth Relations Council addressed the student body before they set out. He hopes the day will inspire future involvement.
"I was 16 when I first joined the Shaw United Way Youth Connections Program," he says. "I had no idea just how many opportunities there were for young people to engage in their community through United Way."
Now 21, he's wrapping up a three year term as the youngest member of United Way's Board of Trustees and has been heavily involved in youth-driven initiatives.
"It opened so many doors for me. Along the way I've met some amazing people, made new friends, and benefited from working alongside dedicated and talented leaders in our community. I've learned so much about the issues our city faces and the strengths of our community."
"From cleaning play areas to washing windows and gardening, these students are making a visible and valuable contribution to our community," says Barb Brown, United Way's Day of Caring manager. "They all get top marks in my book."
Thank you to all the partners, sponsors, volunteers and youth who took the opportunity to participate in United Way's Youth Day of Caring and create opportunities for a better life for everyone.
