What a difference four years and a little financial guidance and encouragement make...

In spring 2004, Krystle was a young mother with a one-year-old daughter, living with her parents. Seeking independence and direction in her life, Krystle saw an opportunity in the Saving Circle Program - one of two innovative asset-building programs delivered by United Way of Winnipeg and seven agency partners.

Over the next six months, with the money management skills and guidance she acquired through the program, Krystle was able to save enough money to finance the purchase of a new computer, with which she was able to complete an online child psychology diploma.

In fall 2005, encouraged by her success with the Saving Circle, Krystle decided to tackle the next rung on the asset-building ladder - an Individual Development Account - with a view toward saving for a down payment on a home.

By March 2007, Krystle had reached her savings goal, which she used to purchase a new home in time to prepare for the July 5th arrival of her second daughter, Summer.

"The money management training was a good experience that taught me a lot about budgeting, which will be especially useful now that I'm a homeowner," said Krystle. "Being able to buy the computer and complete my studies helped keep me motivated to succeed."

"Without the help of these programs I don't think I'd be where I am now."

As Krystle says, asset-building programs offer so much more than just financial incentives. Participants learn the vital money management and life skills they need to become financially self-sufficient. Consequently, they're able to regain control of their lives, which leads to renewed confidence, self-esteem and hope for the future.

The most profound and lasting impact of these asset-building programs, however, occurs when participants' newfound knowledge and enthusiasm influences and inspires family, friends, and the community as a whole.
